It is stable in solution at neutral or acid pH but hydrolysis to mercaptopurine occurs in excess sodium hydroxide (0.1N), especially on warming. Application Azathioprine is mainly used for anti-rejection reactions during organ transplantation, and is often used in combination with corticosteroids or anti-lymphocyte globulin. It is also widely used in autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, active chronic hepatitis, ulcerative colitis, myasthenia gravis, and scleroderma.
